DEATH.

DEATH
So you died. Again. Great job! The good news is, you can still come back to whatever semblance of life you had here in Beacon. Shortly after your death, your body will vanish, only to reappear a few days later, (now "alive",) on one of the pews in the church. The bad news is, you can't just do this forever.
Your first death is a freebie. Your character comes back just as they were, minus the injuries/conditions that killed them in the first place. Starting at their second death, however, characters will begin to experience consequences. They'll still come back, just not quite as they were before. Perhaps something's missing, or broken, or drastically changed. It can be a body part, a sense, an aspect of their personality. Whatever it is, something is wrong now. And as far as anyone knows, there's no way to fix it.
What's more, these effects continue to stack, growing worse each time a character dies. For example, after four deaths, that's three separate alterations, each one more serious than the last. The first consequence might be something small (e.g. a change in hair color), but the second will be a bit worse (e.g. colorblindness), and the third even worse (e.g. losing memories of friends from home), and so on.
In addition to these personal changes, characters may notice that their lanterns are beginning to look a little shabby as well. There's probably some sort of connection there.
Regardless of how many times a character has died, they will always revive in the church at least a day after their death. Typically, characters will revive 2-3 days after their death, but feel free to take liberties with the timing.

character: matt murdock
death number: 1
date of death: during the event
date of revival: a couple days later
manner of death: got torn apart trying to get elektra out of the parade
consequence: firstie gets to coast
no subject
Perhaps it's just beginner's luck, but it seems the team at Solis' lab is able to successfully retrieve his lantern once the Parade moves on, sticks it in the machine, pores over some notes, and.... gets it right! The lantern repairs and Matt finds himself once again with all parts attached, even in the correct places! Phew.
He will wake up in Solis' Lab, unless any of the current lantern repair folks move him elsewhere before he regains consciousness - feel free to check with them on that particular detail.

character: elektra natchios
death number: 1
date of death: during the event
date of revival: a few days later
manner of death: got torn apart by the spirits that tore matt apart when she tried to kill them in retaliation
consequence: baby's first death! if she ends up getting an effect i'd prefer it be psychological, like nightmares or hallucinations, or something sensory, like she temporarily loses one.
no subject
When she wakes up, everything does seem to be in order. Lantern looks good, no injuries, and oh good, her legs didn't even get switched and she still has human skin. Nice! As she prepares to walk back home, though, her lantern flickers a little, dimming just faintly, and in that moment she briefly flashes back to the visions of Matt being torn apart as the spirits rend chunks of flesh and organs from his body with teeth and claws.
But it passes quickly. She will occasionally flash back to this horrifying imagery for the next week, after which it fades and her lantern once again burns consistently.

character: matt murdock
death number: 2
date of death: during the beyond the sea event
date of revival: 3 days after
manner of death: light sucked out of his lantern, he and I quote, "never saw it coming"
consequence: As an effect I'd like his lantern to be unstable and occasionally just, get very dim and leave him weakened as a result.

As it fills back up with light, recapturing that flame of life, it almost goes right back out again, and everyone holds their breaths. The tiny little ember, barely even there, glows faintly and then very slowly it regains its strength.
Matt will indeed find that sometimes the light will flicker and he'll feel lightheaded, hollow, gasping for air. But it does eventually come back. For now, anyway.

character: Stone
death number: This will be number 2!
date of death: During the WE fight in the Beyond the Sea event
date of revival: 3 days after their return (Ashford is carrying his lantern back for him <3 )
manner of death: Decapitation by a World Eater, what a way to go
consequence: Surprise me!
cw: gore/body horror
But over the next hour or two, most of those symptoms slowly dissipate. And he's fine, he thinks - this feels all right. They did a good job, that lantern crew, just had sort of a rough landing.
Whether it's there in the church, looking out a window, or later, catching his reflection in a glass, the bathroom mirror, the surface of the lake - he'll notice immediately that something has changed. His reflection shows not one, but two of him. One Stone looks as expected. The other? His flesh is wet and rotting and blackened. His head lies torn from its neck, and dangles loosely at his shoulders from what tendons and tissue remain attached, and it knocks about if he twists and turns. The eyes bulge outward, the irises are filmy and lifeless. When he moves, the dead Stone moves too - but its motions are jerky, more like a puppet than a living creature. In either winged or groundling form, Stone now has a dead mirror twin who remains with him at all times - and yes, everyone else can see it too.

character: Rosinante Donquixote
death number: god... this is 3 now
date of death: August 3
date of revival: August 6
manner of death: he was real hungry. the world eater got him in the end after all!
consequence: I THOUGHT OF SOMETHING so editing this - after having eaten so much, perhaps his sense of taste is just gone now.
no subject
Rosinante will find that everything is dulled in taste, though the unforgiving ache has blessedly faded. He won't feel constantly starving, but eating is not going to be much fun for him for the time being.

character: Hope
death number: 1!
date of death: 2/13
date of revival: 2/15
manner of death: SHOT THROUGH THE HEART AND YOU'RE TO BLAME
consequence: freebie! I wouldn't mind a light temporary thing though if you want.
no subject
While he's able to get Hope's lantern lit back up, it has a couple new dents and scratches. Not bad! But for one week after Hope's return, she will occasionally feel as though there's something inside her trying to claw its way out through her chest.
Totally fine!

The first time she looks at something reflective, though - or maybe someone has to see and tell her - she'll quickly discover what's wrong.
Her nose is gone.
Now, she can still smell (and taste) normally. But the actual flesh and cartilage that should have been a nose has vanished, leaving a hollow, dark gap and a small ridge of bone in the middle of her face.
