Kuai picks up the spiral-bound book - which is not a notebook, it's just not as professionally-published as the hardback volumes. He glances at the cover as he makes his way toward the others. In faded typewritten text on yellowing pages, it reads:

"Experimental verification of the quantum foam hypothesis. M. Solis, 1958."

At its two-inch thickness it's probably not a light bedtime story. But neither is what he finds on the computer. There are quite a few icons on the computer's desktop, mostly .exe files with names like AMUSE, bridges, ab initio, Lanterns, Spectrum, and others, as well as a few server folders such as ARCHIVE and LOG. Placed in the middle of the screen, however, is a text file which reads "Welcome." It's an obvious place to start.

The file is dated 25 April 2054.

Dear friends,

I write this in the hope that it will never be needed; however, my work carries with it an inherent risk. Every action is a roll of the dice despite Einstein's famous reluctance to accept the metaphor, and I suspect my efforts to weight them may one day fail.

My personal research notes on this computer will enable you to carry on where I left off, if you wish. Programs such as Lanterns and Spectrum should help scan for the lingering spark of life you all carry and keep them maintained. Lanterns is a tool for calibrating the devices once placed into the repair machine, and each must be paired with its ID from Spectrum which carries your unique life signature. I apologize for never writing up instructions as I never anticipated needing to teach anyone, but a list of commands and syntax are available within each program. Spectrum should also be run when connecting through "bridges" in the portal room downstairs in order to retrieve more people to assist you, which I urge you to continue doing. Additional programs and plugins on my workstations and on the server can be adjusted based on your preferences for retrieving items from these worlds. ab initio should help in scanning for materials, and the storage vault in the lab has samples with specific locations and material types converted into a numerical code on each tag, should the list in ab initio not be immediately clear.

At the time of writing this, I think you are all becoming well-aware of how dangerous our situation is and how little time may remain. Your group is the best-equipped I have seen of all of them, which I hope is welcome news, and I wish to try and buy you more time with my work. If I do not succeed, then I hope what remains here is useful in the coming days. May you all see the sun again.

Sincerely,
Maridel Solis
